So you want a small and fast BMW, and who doesn’t? But as I’m sure you know, there are a lot of choices. What if one day you might get the desire to tack the car? Well… that really narrows down your options! You have two real choices in the 3 Series segment: the 335is and (of course) the M3. But you find yourself in the 335is vs M3 debate, who comes out the victor? Especially considering how the used car market continues to make both cars practical for a lot of people.
Let’s start off with the M3. And how can you go wrong with it? With 414 HP and 295 torques, the M3 is a fire spitting, high revving V8 monster. With an mazing 8000 RPM redline and a 0-60 time in somewhere around the 4 second mark this car is fantastic. Available with the “M Double Clutch Gearbox” it can shift much faster than you can blink, and has 7 gears to choose from. The M3 also has the additional functionality of the M Limited Slip rear differential, which can make high speed cornering much prettier. We LOVE the M3, its fast revving engine (with 8 individual throttle bodies for better response) and that iconic quad tip exhaust make it the pinnacle of the 3 series lineup. But does the younger sibling offer some competition?
Enter the 335is. It’s like a 335i but super-sized! The N55 single twin scroll turbocharged engine has been ditched for the N54 twin turbo setup and with considerable tuning and 3 additional radiators, the 335is creates an impressive 320 HP and 332 torques. But that’s not the entire story, since the turbo setup is able to “overboost” the motor to an incredible 370 ft/lbs of torque! Simple math tells us that is a full 75 more than the M3! That’s like adding a Honda Civic to your M3! The 335is weighs less than the M3 too; however, it does lack that LSD in the rear. It features a similar double clutch gearbox (with a 6 speed manual as an option) with head banging fast shifts and has an upgraded interior, to make sure you remember you aren’t just in the regular old 335i. Start up the motor and that throaty 3 liter motor starts purring, and its not to the same tone as the regular 335i either. Step on the gas, and you will be amazed at how all that torque shoves you into your seat. The handling is tight – notably tighter than a 335i and she feels great going around corners too.
In a long straight line, the M3 will win. It has almost 100 more HP, but with the added low end torque, the 335is is just a different driving experience. It’s fast, almost so fast that it surprises you. The M3 takes full advantage of it’s increased redline and puts the power down solidly across the rev band. The 335is just shoves power down your throat (starting at around 1500 RPM) right off the bat! The idea of turbo lag would be silly to even mention around this car.
So if you ask me 335is vs M3, which would I own? I would tell you that both cars are fantastic. They handle great and that feeling behind the wheel is sure to throw a smile across your face in a heartbeat. And while each would be a great decision, at the end of the day, I think I would favor the M3 in the 335is vs M3 debate. I know it costs more to change the oil, costs more to even put gas in, but I love that high redline power plant. If I had not been so attached to naturally aspirated engines ahead of time, I would probably opt for the 335is which can have just as much fun as its older sibling, without as much headache and expense. And even though I would have the M3, if one of my friends had the 335is, I would be begging him to drive it.
